What “miniature” actually means

In the United States a miniature Dachshund is 11 pounds or under at twelve months. Standards usually finish between 16 and 32 pounds. Dogs that land between roughly 12 and 15 pounds are informally called tweenies — a useful description among breeders, not an official class.

Here is the honest part, and it matters more than anything else on this page: no breeder can promise an exact adult weight at ten weeks. Parent weights are the only meaningful predictor available, and we will tell you both parents’ adult weights for any puppy here. A seller who guarantees a precise finished size is guessing or worse.

Our guide to miniature versus standard Dachshunds covers which size suits which household, and why the temperament is effectively identical.

Mini, doxie, sausage dog — the names

Miniature Dachshunds get called a lot of things: mini doxie, miniature sausage dog, mini weenie dog, teeny wiener. They all mean the same dog. Spellings vary more for this breed than almost any other — doxin, dachsund, daschund, dotson — and none of them changes what you are buying.

A word on “teacup” and “micro”

We do not sell teacup Dachshunds, because there is no such size. Teacup, micro and pocket are sales language for dogs bred deliberately undersize or simply for the runt of a litter, and breeding for extreme smallness selects for fragility — fragile bones, dental crowding, hypoglycaemia, anaesthetic risk.

We price every puppy the same regardless of where it falls in the healthy range. Nobody here costs more for being smaller.

What the $1,000 includes

Veterinary examination by a licensed vet before the puppy leaves, age-appropriate vaccinations, worming, our one-year health guarantee covering genetic defects, and the paperwork for your own vet. Our puppies can be registered. Delivery is quoted separately on distance and method — see how delivery works — and we give you that figure before you commit.

For the fuller picture, our guide to what a Dachshund costs covers first-year setup and the lifetime figure most buyers underestimate.

The one health thing to understand first

Being miniature offers no protection from the breed’s defining health risk. Intervertebral disc disease comes from the long spine and short legs, not from size, and small dogs are arguably more likely to be carried badly and allowed to jump off furniture. Keeping the dog lean, using ramps, supporting the back when lifting and walking on a harness all genuinely reduce risk. Our guide to Dachshund back problems covers the warning signs that need a vet the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How big will my miniature Dachshund get?
Up to 11 pounds at twelve months, around 5 to 6 inches at the shoulder. Ask us for both parents’ adult weights — that is the best predictor anyone can give you at this age.

How much are miniature Dachshund puppies?
Ours are $1,000, the same for every puppy regardless of coat, colour or size.

Are miniatures harder to train than standards?
No. Both are clever and stubborn in equal measure. Early consistency matters far more than size.

Are mini Dachshunds good in apartments?
Yes, with the caveat that the real constraint is noise rather than space. They bark, and they are good at it.

Do you ship nationwide?
Yes, across the United States, with delivery quoted separately.
